Dex One Further Expands Online Video Services

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

These days, online video is all the rage. Whether its watching a clip on YouTube or catching up on favorite TV shows on Hulu, consumers are increasingly turning to online video as a primary channel for entertainment and information.

So it’s no surprise that local businesses are also signing on to the video bandwagon in their efforts to showcase new products and services to potential customers. In fact, just yesterday we posted about how Yell launched a new video channel on its website that includes thousands of videos uploaded for free by shops, restaurants, hotels, real estate agents, and beauty salons all over London.

This morning, I came across another announcement from Dex One about its plans to continue expanding its online video services. The company said it is helping local businesses create and post videos on Dex One search sites, as well as across the web on the DexKnows YouTube channel.

Video is now a standard part of Dex One’s online Enhanced Pack service and is offered at no additional charge to clients. Local businesses can now have video, ad placement, logos and other images added to their DexKnows.com listing, which also feature user-generated ratings and reviews, e-mail and website links, coupons, and other offerings.

Today’s announcement comes just weeks after the company launched DexKnows Weddings, a wedding-specific website that includes hundreds of wedding-related videos from local businesses.

R.H. Donnelley Emerges from Bankruptcy as Dex One Corp.

Monday, February 1, 2010

We’re excited to share news that Yellow Pages publisher R.H. Donnelley, which we heard last month was close to exiting bankruptcy, has announced its emergence from Chapter 11 protection as the new Dex One Corporation.

In a press release this morning, the company introduced a new board of directors and its listing on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “DEXO.”

Dex One chairman and CEO David C. Swanson stressed his company’s plans to further develop a hybrid range of advertising solutions including online and mobile search, print yellow pages directories, voice-search platforms and pay-per-click networks.

“We selected the Dex One name because it clearly communicates who we are and what we do – Dex, your trusted marketing partner for over a hundred years, and now, your One stop shop for getting your business exposed to active buying consumers whether they’re searching our robust suite of Dex products or on other major search sites or search engines,” Swanson said.

As we’ve noted, Dex One currently lists 11.5 million businesses online through its DexKnows.com Web site, supplies content for YellowPages.com, and has deals with search engines such as Google and Yahoo. The company is also beginning to offer online video advertising and reputation management for companies seeking to improve their online customer reviews.

Reuters: Idearc and R.H. Donnelley “Plot High Tech Road”

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

Reuters ran a piece this weekend looking at the high-tech futures of two major Yellow Pages companies, Idearc and R.H. Donnelley.

Reuters reports that both companies are likely to emerge from bankruptcy protection very soon and that their revitalized futures lie in developing new opportunities for small businesses on online and mobile platforms. Already, these companies have established viable online businesses: including creating new online directories such as SuperPages.com and dexknows.com, providing content to YellowPages.com and major search engines such as Google and Yahoo, and offering advertising support to services such as Google Maps and Microsoft Map Point.

Idearc and R.H. Donnelley also expressed confidence that their print directories will continue to serve as important tool for small businesses for years to come. Idearc’s research indicates that consumers still conduct billions of searches in print directories each year.

Catch a Flick With DexKnows.com

Monday, August 24, 2009

Internet Yellow Pages sites are continuing to identify ways to make local search more convenient. R.H. Donnelley announced today a new partnership with Tribune Media Services, Inc. to offer searchable movie data – including showtimes, theaters, ratings and reviews and more — on DexKnows.com.

In its news release, R.H. Donnelley said that the deal also brings advance movie ticket purchase functionality to DexKnows.com by way of Fandango, the nation’s leading movie ticketing destination.

Movie information and ticket purchasing is available on DexKnows.com as well as the mobile site (m.dexknows.com) and mobile app, available for download for the iPhone, iPod touch, BlackBerry, and other smart phones.

Deborah Eldred at R.H. Donnelley compared the partnership to “mixing butter and popcorn.”

I gave the new feature a test run. I typed in “movie theaters” and a Las Vegas zip code in the search box.

DexKnows.com quickly generated a list of nearby theaters, indicating which it offered showtimes and which offered online ticketing. When I clicked on a show time of interest, it forwarded me quickly to Fandago to buy the ticket. It all worked together seamlessly.

Of course, there are a number of sites out there to find movie information, so the added power in incorporating this feature into DexKnows.com is that it further centralizes the local information consumers need. Instead of visiting one site to find a nearby restaurant, another to find a movie, and a third for an after movie dessert – you can locate it all in one spot.

For advertisers, this feature delivers added value and more sales leads – exactly what they need in a tough economy.

I give this deal five stars and a big thumbs up!
